Acoustical Consultant Spotlight: Emily Jaumard

Our acoustic consultant team is something we at Avant Acoustics talk about frequently in this blog. We usually focus on the work they can do and the projects our team has tackled in the past. Today we’d like to take the time to focus on one member of our team to let you get to know who our acoustic consultant team are as people. Today we are putting that focus on Emily Jaumard.

Acoustic Consultant Spotlight

Why Acoustical Design?

Emily was planning to research the effect lighting has in buildings. However, through a stroke of luck, her student adviser at the School of Architecture she attended had her meet with Bob Coffeen. Bob’s enthusiasm for architectural acoustics was so great that it led Emily to try working as an acoustician after she graduated college. Fifteen years later, Emily is still a valued member of our acoustic consultant team.

Leadership

In her many years of experience as a member of our acoustic consultant team, leadership has become very important to Emily. In her words, “A leader does what is best for the team, and rather than drawing attention to themselves works for the good of others”. That said, Emily thinks of herself as a follower: attentive, supportive, responsive, and ready at any moment to take action to make a project work.

Contributions to the AVANT Acoustics Team

As an architectural acoustician, Emily doesn’t usually lead an acoustic consultant team. She works as a follower, making the clients’ designs work and work beautifully. Her architectural background helps her to communicate easily with design teams. This lets her focus on the clients’ design vision and goals and integrate acoustics seamlessly into their design.

Emily loves to work on airport projects. She loves the complexity and challenges of the work as well as getting to work with team members all over the world. Her favorites are the Washington Dulles Airport, Reagan National Airport, Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, Orlando International Airport and Blaise Diagne International Airport in Dakar, Senegal.

To Emily, the AVANT Advantage means focus. When entering a new space with her family, they can’t help but laugh as she claps to hear echoes, analyzes acoustical treatments, or explains to them why the announcements are unintelligible. She believes all of her colleagues are passionate about making places sound their best.

Outside of AVANT Acoustics

When not at work, Emily loves to spend time with her family: dancing, traveling, home renovating, craft projects, building LEGO castles, and reading books. Emily sits on the ASTM international committee E33 on Building and Environmental Acoustics as part of her work with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International. She reviews and critiques proposed changes to testing standards related to evaluating acoustical materials and sound isolation performance of various building elements.
